Malaysia Decides 2008

... and Rakyat Malaysia has spoken.

I had the privilege of following the most exciting national election in modern-Malaysian history last night.

  • Ruling coalition BN was denied 2/3 majority in Parliament.
  • All Western Peninsular Malaysia states (Penang, Perak, Selangor, Kedah) and Kelantan fell into the hands of Opposition. That translates to BN having a net loss of 4 states.
  • Ruling coalition's top guns defeated by fresh faces from Opposition, with stark vote majorities to boot. One of the component party's leadership was literally shattered by the defeat(s).

This political tsunami is a new era in Malaysian political history.
The Rakyat has unanimously spoken.
And their voices are heard; strong and clear.

Let us hope the Opposition cherish the trust the Rakyat had mandated them, and prove their meat.
Away with corruption.
Away with racism.
Away with good-for-nothing senators who slack while taxpayers' hard-earn benefits pump into their pockets (for residential renovations.....).
Away with NATO (No Action Talk Only) representatives whose only calibre is to make stupid statements that fuel national embarrassment.

Bring on efficiency.
Bring on transparency.
Bring on meritocracy and bureaucratic integrity.
Bring on economic and human development.
Bring on Bangsa Malaysia.

I'm looking to the day where Malaysians are no longer defined by race.
There's no Melayu, Cina, India, or Lain-lain. There's only Malaysian.

On a more local note, I'm looking forward to Lim Guan Eng giving Penang a major facelift. Penangites have been denied of development for too long.

Looks like I might consider going home after all.

The year 2008 unfolds a new era in our political history.
Malaysia has decided.
