The year that was

あなたにとって、人生はどんな意味が持っているんですか?

In less than 12 hours, the curtains will be drawn for the year of 2006 and the year 2007 will take the stage. In my hometown, as well as cities all over the globe, the world is preparing to party the New Year Eve's night thru, celebrating the coming of a brand new year. As I am not much of a party animal, I have no plans of joining the screamfest or dancing the night to herald 01.01.2007. Such nostalgia, the days of my teens crowding with strangers in the road party, screaming New Year wishes, welcoming the Oh.One.Oh.One. with confetti, party hats and bloody loud music. Over the years, such party enthusiasm wore off and lately, I find myself mulling over the significance of life more than thinking of where to celebrate the new year. This year is no different.

As one year replaces another, I learnt many more things, not just academically, but more importantly about life as a human on this Earth. あったりまいだろう?

  • Lesson One
~~~~- The ONLY constant thing in life is change -
In our lifetime, nothing is forever. Nothing stays the same, unchanged, for all times.
Times change.
Seasons change.
Circumstances change.
People change.
More than 10 years ago, abstinence before marriage was revered, marriage was a sacred union and divorce was unpopular. Today, teenage sex and multiple partners are an o.k., STDs do not raise eyebrows, marriage is a child's play and divorce is the first option out of marital conflict.
More than 10 years ago, the earth was still green, the sky was still blue, the world was a beautiful place. Today, concrete jungles rule, forest fires choke the skies with thick blankets of haze, unnatural rainfall causes floods, material damage, and took lives, tsunami and typhoon killed millions, perpetual diseases plague humankind - all of which adversely affect sustainability of the earth and human livelihood.
More than 10 years ago, I thought friends are for life. Once a friend, forever a friend. I thought friends will always be there for you no matter what happens. When you are down, your friend will always be there to bring you up. I grew up with the cheesy teddy bear icon "Forever Friends". Today, I have seen what 'friends' are. While I do not deny I had my good times and memorable companionship, they were good at the moment in time only. Savor the snapshot moment because they do not last. In reality, when you are at your lowest ebb, you can be sure that you can only depend on yourself to pull yourself through. Never depend on others, because it is a parasitic behavior, and because it will break you when your 'friend' does not return your call for help. In my opinion, the 'Forever Friends' teddy bear is frankly a business trash.
Thus, it would be idealistic and foolish of us to expect things to stay the same they are. I had been naive and stubborn when it comes to accepting changes, because I had always wanted things to stay the way they were. When you reached a mental and emotional equilibrium with your surroundings, the last thing you want is an external disruption that throws off your equilibrium, leading to mental and emotional disarray. However, that is life - it is ALWAYS in a disarray. One particularly difficult lesson I learnt was never to assume that people's thoughts, feelings and perspective are unchanging. They change like the tide, in accordance to the changing circumstances. In a way, I hated it, because it seems to me like every promise made is broken without a brief consideration to the meaning of a 'promise'. I think the new age marriage vows can already drop the "..till death do us part.." and be replaced by "..till divorce do us part..". Well, unfortunately, we have to adapt to these changes, and to accept the changes, because we have no control over it; if we don't, we will be the only ones suffering the mental and emotional impact.
  • Lesson Two
~~~~- Stop judging, open your mind, and practise courtesy -

I have seen and observed many people, and I have come to learn that we are selfish is a human nature. There is no one who does not think about themselves, and is always thinking for themselves. We are full of ourselves, whether we realize it or not. Hence, it is hypocritical of us to point at and judge another individual before truly reflecting on ourselves. I have heard enough of people, including myself, criticizing others based on what we physically observe at the point of time.
Why are we putting down or being judgemental on another individual?
Does it make us feel much more superior speaking lowly of another?
What right do we have to flippantly comment on another when we have not been in his/her circumstances?

I became irritated when I hear my acquaintances making shallow comments before understanding the others' circumstances, and soon realized myself guilty of such bad habit. I learnt then that unless we have experienced the other's circumstances, we know absolutely nothing about his/her situation and have absolutely no right to make any flippant comments or to act superior about the choice of their action. To make judgemental comments on them not only reflects our shallow mindedness, but also will emotionally impact them. Do we really garner such pleasure from making fun of others? When I come to understand that, I find myself talking and gossiping less, and thinking for others more.

This also leads to my realization, that people of today can be quite discourteous. Just a quick check, in a conversation:

  1. How often do you wait for the other person to completely finish talking and listen attentively to the message that he/she wants to convey across?
  2. How often is it that you already formulate an argument or defense counterstatement in your head while the other person has not yet finish conveying his/her entire message?
  3. How often is that midway when the other person is talking, you disagree with his/her point and setup a mental barrier, and stop listening to him/her?
  4. How often do you interject the other person's speech to disagree with him/her before they finished talking?

Communication is the way by which we socialize with the people around us. Yet, it seems to me we still lack the courtesy to communicate effectively. I absolutely dislike it when people do not let me finish my talking because I have yet to completely get my point across. Or when my speech is interrupted, breaking the idea I am trying to send across. That is when I observed that I am also guilty of such flaws too. And I learnt that courtesy does make a difference in interacting with others. Next time, try listening with an open mind before you judge and interject the person talking with your ideas. This is simply another manifestation of selfishness. When can we stop thinking for ourselves and start thinking for others? I find that it is only fair that we comment after we understand the situation described by the speaker, and such attentive listening also puts the speaker at ease because it assures him/her that we take weight to their message. Many things are easier said than done, and it requires alot of patience and discipline, but I felt that it is only right to treat another person with utmost courtesy.

I really think people should take time to reflect on their actions, because it helps to identify what we could have done wrong, and can be improved for the betterment of ourselves and also in our relation with the people around us.

  • Lesson Three
~~~~- Live for today -
The past cannot be changed.
The future may not come.
Births and deaths are always cycling, hanging in precarious balance. For every death you read about today, there is a birth into the world. Natural disasters, accidents, diseases took so many lives that I no longer feel anything about the next cancer victim dying of terminal stage of carcinoma.
Today my family received a call that my aunt had just passed away from terminal cancer. I am ashamed to say that I do not feel anything upon listening to the news. I wondered why. Was it that we weren't very close to her? I have not seen her in years. Was it that I knew there is no cure to cancer? Was it that I was numbed by the easy occurence of death? Have I become a cold person? I still do not know. However, I do remember my cousin's death several years ago that really shook me. To me, nothing do justice to the 4 year-old whose life was robbed by simple pneumonia. Then I learnt, that life is what we live today. Tomorrow may not come, so planning for tomorrow may be futile if we do not fully experience today.
Furthermore, I have been through enough to learn that everything in the past cannot be changed and we can only better what we are doing today. I learnt it the hard way, that every mistake, no matter how small or large, cannot be erased and will be etched in our history. However, we have to accept that it happened, forgive ourselves, and take the responsibility to move forward.
And because we cannot change the past or tell the future, we can only live to enjoy today.
Life's most important lesson is then, to open our mind and continue learning, because there is just so much to learn.
Happy New Year!
Guardian Angel-san, otsukaresama deshita!!!
I believe my Guardian Angel has been working very hard at protecting me. This is because something miraculous always happen whenever I felt all hopes are lost.
You see, results for last semester's finals are out today. I dreaded checking my results because I know I sucked last semester. It wouldn't be a surprise if I flunked a paper or two. (Remember, I fluked 20 points on the last paper??!!) I was afraid that I might see an "F" there on the screen, and would have to take another paper in the coming semester. God forbid, if I flunked 2 papers, I would have to remain a semester! I mean, I DID register 8 graded subjects, of which 7 were examinable. (Only crazy people do that!) I must have been out of my mind to put myself through the stress and depression - talk about self mutilation.
Anyway, reality is reality, like it or not, the grades are final. If it's bad, it remains bad. So, when I clicked the link to view my results, I prepared myself for the worst. When I say worst, it feels worst than preparing for death.
So when the page came, I scanned for grades "C" and below. And found none.
I almost cried tears of relief, thinking, "THANK YOU, Guardian Angel!!"
Then when I really looked at the grades to my subjects, I see the pattern repeating itself.
The papers I thought I wrote better earned me lower grades than those I thought I would flunk. And the paper I thought I did very badly had an above average grade -_-''' It happens almost every semester! It's so unfulfilling when you did your best for a pet paper and earn a low grade for it.
And the papers I did best were NOT science papers. I spent less than 24 hours studying for HRM and got an A for it. The examiner must have been drunk when marking my answer book.
Nevertheless, it seems I can have a calm closure to this saga of finals, which by the way, I DO NOT want to relive. I may not have performed excellently, but I feel the grades were reasonable, given the effort I put in in the midst of all the stress and depression of having too many exams in such a short time.
Lesson learnt : (those taking Bio. Sci.,)
DON'T BE STUPID AND REGISTER 8 SUBJECTS IN ONE SEMESTER.
(unless you want to kill yourself)
Sweet Round Things
Winter Solstice Festival - the Chinese Thanksgiving celebration where families get together and make glutinous rice balls and offer them in sweet sugar water to Gods for prayers, giving thanks for the bountiful harvest all year round. But we do no harvesting, me and my family are just thankful to be able to spend time together at the year end =)
Actually, when I returned home, the actual day for prayers was already over, but we just make the sweet glutinous rice for fun.... and for my consumption. The saying goes that making the round rice balls is a symbol of the family being united together, so yeah. Frankly, I just want to eat the sweet dessert.
True to the spirit of getting together, we spent the weekend trawling the island for good food. I especially loved hanging out at cafés like Dome, and digging into Dome's sinfully delicious Chocolate Brownie. This baby is one hell of a brownie. Nothing comes close to this choco-dripping-raisin-filled brownie. Served with a cup of hot chocolate, voilá! Afternoon tea alá París.
Food at home is always good XD
病気だったけど。。。
Gomen, gomen!
Lots of things had been happening and I had not the time to blog T_T
FYP had started since last week, or rather, preliminary work for FYP had started. My mentor(s) and I had worked on 3 experiments to date, of which 2 are to optimize the new equipment. Aaa, chotto matta. I haven't properly introduced my FYP yet.
My FYP (Final Year Project, equivalent to what most of you will call a thesis project) is umm, something to do with biofilm, fluorescence-activating-cell-sorter, bacterial library clones, bacterial promoters. There you go.
Like I said, I'm still at preliminary stage and have not exactly started on my project yet, so it's kinda difficult to explain. But it's nice to work with bacteria cause they grow FAST! nyahaha. This is especially good if you need to repeat experiments to get good data. But no good because you get no life - bacteria will keep proliferating exponentially regardless you have weekend plans or not. What selfish creatures. My entire weekend last week was spent playing with these selfish creatures.
As a result of my weekend spent in the North Pole (I meant, North building), I came down with high fever on Sunday. I don't know if the university is filthy rich or plain ignorant, but they NEVER fix the air-conditioning temperatures in the school buildings! The labs and microscope rooms are FREEZING cold! I was shivering when using the confocal microscope in South Pole (I meant, building). And it didn't help that the stupid confocal software kept hanging and required restarting.
On top of burning at 38.8 degrees, my intestinal system decided to join in the Sickness Carnival to, well, make me feel more sick. In the end, I had diarrhea, and eventually, a massive headache that made me nauseous. I spent my day yesterday alternating between the bedroom and the toilet. The weather was also very gloomy and it rained more than 36 hours straight, non-stop. Made me felt even more depressed.
However, thankfully, after a day's rest in bed, I'm all okay and bounding back to the lab to play with bacteria again.
でも!
Two days later I'll be going home again XD I'm sure many people will be heading home for holidays too.
Merry Christmas and a Happy Holidays to all of you!
メーリクリスマス!!!
Nodame Cantabile on fire
My favorite bookstore Kinokuniya is having a members-only-sale for the month of December 2006. Not wanting to miss the great discount, I traveled downtown today to get some good bargains. Earlier, I had caught on the heat of Nodame Cantabile, and so had bought the first two volumes of Nodame Cantabile Japanese manga for reading pleasure. Maybe it is the influence of the spectacular drama, but I find the two volumes enjoyable (plus, the Japanese is not very difficult to understand haha), so am quite looking forward to get a few more volumes since there's such a good bargain now.
Nodame Cantabile volume 01 and 02
Much to my dismay, volumes 1 thru 14 are all SOLD OUT!! T_T
When I asked the bookstore assistant if they have anymore stock other than those displayed on the shelf, she said it's out of stock in Singapore and even in Japan! Because the Nodame Cantabile drama is now airing in Japan and is extremely popular, the manga ran out of print! And there is still no word as to when the new batch of print will be produced.
It's amazing how the drama can create such increbile fandom for the manga. Ninomiya Tomoko must be laughing her way to the bank now XD. It's sad that I couldn't get the volumes I intended to buy, but the dry stock is a reflection of Nodame Cantabile drama's popularity. I'm very glad that it is popular, as I think the drama cast did a wonderful job in the acting of the show.
However, Lady Luck must be at my heels today as I managed to spot a f.i.n.a.l copy of Nodame Cantabile volume 9 on the shelf. Of course I grabbed it before the next person had the chance to. Bwahahaha. On top of that, after paying for it and tearing the plastic cover off, I realized that volume 9 is the volume I wanted to read. The drama version ends at volume 9, and I get to read where the current episode 09 left off. Double bwahahaha.
A tale of Soap River and the Jinx Box
My kitchen is cursed to be the cleanest. And central to this curse is the jinx box so-called Washing Machine.
I reached my apartment this morning and loaded the first of my three laundry load into the washing machine. While waiting for the laundry to be done, I swept and mopped the floor. Like it should normally be, the machine sang its "Laundry-is-done!" song after half an hour and I put the laundry out to dry before refilling the machine with the second batch of laundry and took my shower. When I stepped out of the shower, I thought I saw my image on the kitchen floor. Now, I know I mopped the floor pretty well, but definitely not to the extend the kitchen floor would sparkle and mirror my image. Fetching my glasses from my room, I return to the kitchen and to my utmost horror, soapy water is leaking from the bottom of the washing machine. The drainage pipe was intact and well placed in the bathroom, but the machine is leaking!
Quickly, I lifted the lid of the machine and to my horror, again, the laundry drum is filled to the brim with soap water, with shiny soap suds as the icing. By reflex, I paused the washing program, thinking that it would stop the water from flowing out of the machine. The jinxed box had better ideas: it preferred to continue flooding the kitchen with soap suds regardless the program is halted or not. So it kept leaking as I watched in dismay. When I tried to determine the source of leakage, I was stump to find the source of Soap River coming from the bottom of the machine - meaning, I have no idea what is going on. Frantically, I tried all means to stop the soap water from turning my kitchen into a swimming pool... using rags and mop to stop the water flow. I mean, man!!... I just cleaned the kitchen!
After the floor is not longer Soap Pool, I tried to investigate and figure out how to fix the machine by myself before splurging the bucks on the pros. Scientific Me decided to try and run the Wash Programme, which leads to the laundry drum being filled with water. Scientific Me apparently wasn't very bright at all, and when the laundry drum was filled, Soap River gushed enthusiastically. Now just who am I kidding... instead of fixing the problem, I've just land me in Soap Pool once again. Can you imagine the agony of having mopping the kitchen dry right after you just mopped it dry??
I gave up and in desperation, messaged two friends to ask them who I could contact to fix the jinxed box. I have never anticipated the prospects of having a broken washing machine, so I basically have no idea who to call or how to look for the repairman. In the end, thanks to Mr. S, I managed to contact the Jinx Box Savior. However, Jinx Box Savior is not all the time a nice guy, and he charged me $80 to fix the washing machine by unscrewing-and-rescrewing things as well as bundling some snakelike tubes in Jinx Box using some flimsy plastic strips. There goes every single dollar in my wallet...however, I shan't complain much as Jinx Box obediently finished my third round of laundry.
Apparently, Jinx Box is so enthusiastic in doing its job that it cleans more than just my laundry. As a result, my kitchen is always sparkling clean. Maybe if I look carefully I can see my mirror image on the kitchen floor...
Mi-ku
Everytime I return to my hometown, I would take the opportunity to eat as much local cuisine as possible. You know, the craving for something authentic, something only found in your hometown.
This time around, I had a craving for this bun called "mi-ku" in Hokkien. It's actually a very plain flour bun, without any fillings watsoever. However, when taken warm with butter, the simplicity of the bun-meal makes me fuzzy all over. The "mi-ku" takes the shape of a pink turtle sitting atop a piece of paper, like this:
"Mi-ku" are usually used as offerings for prayers by the chinese Taoist community. The reason the bun is shaped like a turtle is because it is an auspicious symbol in the Chinese culture. I don't know why it is painted with pink dye, but the blue print on the back of turtle usually means "prosperity". The paper underneath the turtle probably is placed for baking convenience.
The edible part of the "mi-ku" is the body of the turtle, which is made of self-raising flour. It is fluffy inside; when steamed and spread with butter, the warm and soft texture of the bun with the fragrance of the butter renders a pleasant experience of eating plain bread.
So, the day after the 15th-day-of-chinese-month prayers, I woke up, eager for a breakfast of warm "mi-ku". To my greatest horror, when I lifted the larder, the turtle was GONE!!! I was aghast at the prospects of my "mi-ku" being gobbled ahead by another resident at home. I was so devastated, after all, it was only during this time of the month the "mi-ku"s are on sale! If the buns are eaten, I would have to wait another month, for which I will no longer be hanging around at home!
I raided all the possible corners of the kitchen where the turtle could possible hide.... but naught!!! Grouchily, I suspect that my turtle must have been consumed by Grandma, who doesn't understand my deep craving for "mi-ku". Darn, the thought ruined my day. Then, out of a sliver of hope, I looked into the cooking pot.... and to my unbelievable delight, the turtle is in there!!!! Waiiiii~~!! I danced in delirium, and quickly steam the bun before it disappears for good.
Ahh... the warm and soft texture of "mi-ku" never fails to satisfy my craving for simplistic bakery.
Recuperation underway
I just finished my last paper, Japanese Language Proficiency Test Level 3 (JLPT3). Finally, all done.
*Pause*
No, I don't feel any different.
No cause for celebration. Not even an itsy bitsy feeling of relief, but resigned, yes. Oh, well.
Anyway, the JLPT3 was held all the way at the other end of the country, and it took me around 2 hours to reach the venue, which is The Japanese School (日本人学校). There was so many people of varying age group (yes, aunties and uncles were examinees too!) flocking the school to take JLPT3 and JLPT2. Almost every room in the school were converted into an exam room. My seating was located in a 研究室 (science laboratory). The lab benches there were very low (and cute!) and the whole place is sooooo clean for a science lab. No shoes were allowed inside, so you can imagine how sparkling clean the floor is.
So the exam took slightly more than 3 hours. First, we started off with the Vocabulary paper. It was not that easy, but not exactly tough either. In fact, some of the questions were pretty easy and.... funny. There was one question asking the appropriate usage of the word "ねっしん" (enthusiastic). We were supposed to choose one sentence that demonstrates the appropriate usage of the word. One of the sentences read something like this: "雨がねっしんでふりそうだ” (the rain is falling enthusiastically). I almost laughed out loud. XD Having said that, not all the questions are easy either, I basically hentam on several which I didn't have a good idea what the answer was.
After a short break, the second paper was Listening. I thought I had slightly more confidence in this paper because Sensei had practise the 2005 Listening Test with us. However, I was thrown off composure when I lost track on a few conversations. And I have to say that is wasn't that easy afterall, because some of the questions require you to make a summary of the conversation before you can answer the questions. The answers may not be directly picked up from the conversation itself.
The last paper was Grammar and Comprehension. I thought this one is a goner, because my Japanese grammar sucks. To further prove my point, the first question left me stunned. It was simple, but I didn't know which particle to insert. So I skipped and skipped all the questions I wasn't very sure of and surprisingly, manage to finish ahead of time and even checked once more thoroughly before submitting the answer sheet. Fushigi da na.....
Overall, I find JLPT3 not very difficult, but given time, I think I could have done better. Couldn't really helped it since my school exams ended late and I had only a day to catch up with the remaining syllabi before taking the exam. Hopefully I will be able to pass the JLPT3. Well, regardless I pass or not, I still intend to continue studying Japanese to the advance level (1級). Funny thing is, I felt happy taking this kind of examinations. Taking up the challenge to improve on my language proficiency has always been an intriguing thing for me.
With all the stress I have been under for the past few weeks, I'll be heading home to recuperate before starting on my final year project (FYP). So my one-week recuperation plan includes:
  • sleeping like no tomorrow
  • reading manga like no tomorrow
  • watching J-dorama (Nodame Cantabile!) & anime like no tomorrow
  • eating Hokkien Mee at Burmah Road
  • updating my other two *stale* blogs
  • .....did I mention sleeping??
最後の最後
After a horrible 2.5 hours, my semester examinations finally ended without much pomp. I didn't have enough time to finish the paper, so I totally flunked 20 points. Yatta ne.
