Is it okay to give up?

I am very stressed.
When I see the next set of notes, I feel like screaming.
When I think of the exam tomorrow, I tremble with panic and feel like crying.
When I reach for the reading materials, I feel mentally drained.
I can't even keep my concentration consistent.
How long can I hold up myself before I break under this tremendous pressure?

Is it okay to give up?

When will the cat stop wailing?

I'm in a really murderous mood right now.

For almost 3 hours now, some airhead across the block has been wailng into his karaoke set. I don't mean singing for heaven's sake, it is wailing, okay. Like when a cat caterwauls into the moonlight??
3 freaking hours non stop of this noise pollution is really driving me crazy!!! I can't concentrate on my already-difficult-to-comprehend Genetics notes. I mean, sing all you want you freak, but don't SCREAM and WAIL at such an ugly pitch all across the neighbourhood!!!!!

You think if I call the Civil Defense they will confiscate his karaoke set?

秒速5センチメートル

I know I shouldn't be here. But I was reading Omni's latest entry at Random Curiosity and was recommended to this trailer that took my breath away.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

I admit to knowing nuts about Makoto Shinkai or 秒速5センチメートル (5 centimeters per second), which apparently had been promoted sometime ago. It is an animation movie consisting of 3 (related) short stories:

第1話 桜花抄 (Oukashou)
第2話 コスモナウト (Cosmonaut)
第3話 秒速5センチメートル (Byousoku 5 senchimetoru)

All I know is that I watched the trailer, am so impressed with every aspect of the movie that I know this is THE animation I must watch in 2007. The animation is incredibly fluid, the colors are so beautiful and serene, the music is so emotionally provoking, the voice acting pulled heart strings. I think the art is absurdly high quality and the best I've seen. It reminds me of Miyazaki's Spirited Away. From the trailer, it seems to me Byousoku 5 Centimeters might surpass Spirited Away. Here are some images from the official site to justify why:

This is definitely one animation not to be missed.

白い恋人

I'm so mentally tired. Just got back from a 5-hour JLPT3 listening practice class held specially by Sensei... and now trying to memorize Genetics slides.

The practice class just now was like... shinkansen (bullet train) mode. We did the 2005 JLPT listening test and then Sensei went through every single question, explaining all the grammar and vocabulary that we have yet to learn. Can you imagine cramming 150 hours worth of Japanese course in 4 hours? Now I know what Japanese cram school is like :P

However, no matter how taihen it sounds, Sensei was truly wonderful to specially conduct the class. She told us she stayed up till 3a.m. to prepare the scripts!! *awww...*
本当に感動しました!

To keep us in a gambarimasu-mood, Sensei treated us to cookies she received as souvenirs from Japan. I got a piece of Hokkaido's 白い恋人!!!うわい~~!!I love Shiroi Koibito patissiere!! When I was in Sapporo, we bought a box of Shiroi Koibito mix chocolate cookies and they tasted 1st class!!! And it was very expensive... although indescribably exquisite.

If you have not heard before, 白い恋人 (Shiroi Koibito), which literally means white beloved ones, is a luxurious chocolate cookie range produced only in Hokkaido, Japan. The cookies comes in singular packets. The delicate chocolate piece is sandwiched between a pair of squarish, fine, crumble-like biscuits... and when you take a bite, you'll fall in love. 恋になれる. まじです。チョコレトーは本々は白いので、「白い恋人」ってすると思います。ははは、多分ですね。

Shiroi Koibito is definitely a must try should you go to Hokkaido. You wouldn't have been to Sapporo, Hokkaido if you have not tasted Shiroi Koibito ;)

Now, if I can get another box of 白い恋人...

I'm feeling pretty much drained, yet, I'm consciously aware that I cannot be drained until 3rd of Dec. I have no time to be wallowing in depression, no matter how depress I feel after a paper because the next one is just around the bend. I cannot even take a break to stop feeling panicked and worried, because all the modules are bloody difficult. I can only live with this stress and panic for almost another 220 hours.

I think I'm crazy to take 8 exams in 2 weeks.
What was I thinking?

14歳の母

I find this article from Mainichi Shimbun interesting.

"You were high school students before she got pregnant and before you had sex, too. Don't you think it's a bit weird that you suddenly become defenseless high school students just because of the pregnancy,"

I can't help but completely agree with this Kitamura-sensei. In these days where teenage sex is so widely popular, I wondered what the teenages were thinking when they committed themselves to physical intercourse and then refuse to face the consequences. To blame it on the heat of the moment is simply irresponsible and immature. Do they think about the results of their action? Are they aware of the risks such as STDs apart from pregnancies? Sometimes, I think it is not them being naive, but are being ignorant of the responsibilities of such actions.

美しい日本の私

美しい日本の私 (Japan, the Beautiful and Myself)

I came across these beautiful poems when reading the autumn edition of Kateigaho magazine featuring Kawabata Yasunari's Nobel lecture.

春は花夏ほととぎす秋は月冬雪さえてすずしかりけり

-道元(1200年~53年)の「本来面目」-

( "In the spring, cherry blossoms, in the summer the cuckoo.
In autumn the moon, and in winter the snow, clear, cold."
- quoted from 'Innate Spirit, by Dougen )

雲を出でて我にともなふ冬の月風や身にしむ雪や冷めたき

-明恵上人(1173年~1232年)-

( "The winter moon comes from the clouds
to keep me company.
The wind is piercing, the snow is cold."
-by Myoe )

...月を見る我が月になり、
我に見られる月が我になり、
自然に没入、自然と合一してぬます。

( "Seeing the moon, he becomes the moon,
the moon seen by him becomes him.
He sinks into nature, becomes one with nature.”

- quoted from Japan, the Beautiful and Myself
Kawabata Yasunari, Nobel Laureate 1968 )

I have an innate fetish for abstract and reflective poems or haiku and the likes, so bear with the literary phrenetic mood of mine. I find it simply amazing these poetic maestroes can churn such emotionally rendering words.
本当に美しかった。

The FINAL of the finals is here

My FINAL undergraduate examinations has begun.
Already one down, 7(!) more to go.

Nov-16 : LJ82 - Japanese Language Level3
Nov-22 : BS405 - Current Topics in Neurobiology
Nov-23 : CV4202 - Human Resource Management
Nov-24 : BS406 - Current Topics in Cell Biology
Nov-28 : BS407 - Current Topics in Genetics & Genomics
Nov-29 : BS408 - Current Topics in Immunology
Dec-01 : BS411 - Current Topics in Virology/Microbiology
Dec-03 : JLPT Level3

Japanese Level3 was not as easy as I thought it would be. The comprehension took me more than an hour. I had only less than an hour for my essay. And it was definitely no easy topic: 10年前と今、10年後の私. Most people think "Ahh...writing about yourself what... easy stuff, blow your own trumpet lorr".

ばかのこと言うな。

I do not know which grammatical tense to use for the 10年後の私. Heck, I do not even know which sentence structure to use.
何々~たい とか。。。
何々~ます とか。。。
何々~と思います とか。。。。。 ぜんぜんしらなかった!!

In the end, I didn't finish my composition as time was up... and I didn't even have to check the previous sections. The filling-in-the-verbs section was pretty tricky too.

まぁ、日本語の試験もう終わったので、何でも考えても無用です。
後できるだけ次の試験に一生懸命頑張ります。
それじゃ。。。勉強をつづけなければきゃ。。。

Where are you heading?

  • Are you ever satisfied with what you already have?
  • How many times is it that when you already have something you longed for in hand, but instead of feeling contented, you seek to long for something else that is perceptively better?
  • Have you wondered why you wished to get out of your current place/position for another, and when you do, the place/position you land in doesn't seem as ideal as you thought?
  • Why is it that the grass is always greener on the other side?

I often wondered: is greed a human nature? I don't think there is a human on Earth that is not greedy; it's just a matter of realizing and admitting it or turning a blind eye and denying it.

Why is man on a constant pursuit to quench his endless thirst?
At the end of the day, what is he chasing for? The materialistic object itself? The animalistic desire of personal gratification? The deceptive illusion that was nurtured in his mind's eye?

What are you hoping for in return?

What are you chasing?

Why are you chasing? What is the meaning of this endless running?

Where are you heading for?

Intrusion of privacy

I'm like, so seething mad right now. Even though the reason is trivial.

I slept really late last night, so (naturally) I overslept into the late morning. It's pretty much okay, since it's Sunday anyway. However, my slumber was rudely interrupted by this hard knock on the main door and a guy calling out, "Hello". First, I thought he might be a sales man or the likes, so I ignored and went back to sleep. However, the b*****d knocked on the door and called so persistently I wanted to scream at him to get the hell out of my premises. He definitely wasn't my acquaintance, and if he were looking for my housemates, he should give up as they were not in. It's not like my housemates left any message for me saying that they are expecting someone. Logically, a girl alone in the house wouldn't simply open the door for people she don't want to entertain rite?

While he persistently knocked, I persistently ignored him. Finally, after what it seemed like ages, あのやろう gave up. But hell, my slumber was interrupted beyond the point of return, so I got up unhappily and went to the bathroom to freshen up. And WTH!? He came back to knock on my door!!!! I didn't answer, since I was in the bathroom anyway. He gave up after a minute and peace ensued.

I trudged back into my room, and sat on my bed, pulling my gauzy curtains to cover the windows completely. You see, my bedroom is situated in quite a precarious location, in that anyone from the hallway outside can actually look in, but a clothes rack is in the way, so unless the person really wants to peek in, he/she can really do it. As I was absentmindedly thinking what the guy had probably wanted, he returned, this time with a middle-aged woman in tow.

I tell you... that OBASAN really snapped my nerves. Ok, so she yelled on top of her lungs and knocked the door so hard, I thought it would break. That I still don't care. What really pissed me off is that she asked the guy to lift my curtains and PEEK into my room!!! WTF???
Still seated on the bed, I was shocked and angry. What right does she have to intrude in my privacy??? That is TRESPASSING, woman! It's a violation of human rights!

As the guy lifted the curtains, I stared at him in shock and annoyance. The lady said (in this bloody loud commanding voice) that she is from the (highest) 12th floor and they want to wash the aircond compressor, so she wants me to close my master bedroom windows. She was like DIRECTING me okay... like "You have to close it right now cause we are washing the aircond. Right now, close right now!" she bloody yelled in Mandarin.

It took all my willpower to restrain from giving her a piece of my mind on her actions. It disgusts me that someone elder than myself, a middle-aged woman with more experience than myself, acted in such an unrefined and un-adultly manner. Would you yell at someone when asking them to do something, that is in your favor?? Would you PEEK INTO SOMEONE'S ROOM just to get your bloody message across?? That is, to me, terribly disrespectful and an intrusion of privacy. My blood wouldn't boil if she had explained and asked nicely. I wouldn't be so mad if she hadn't LIFTED THE CURTAINS AND PEEKED INTO MY ROOM. She could have left a note under my door or something. I may not be of her age group, but I felt that it is a matter of her respect and courtesy to neighbors. All the yelling at my face, directing me to do that, and intruding my privacy, really pissed me off.

that obasan............... :X
