バカなことばかり

You know, I think I may have fried my brain cells or something. Lately, I've been doing many stupid things.

It must have been my incompetence, as I seem to be multitasking most of the time. Take last Friday for example, I went to lab very early to do vector control and to run (the umpteenth) genomic DNA extraction at the same time. Kind of stupid, really, to run two experiments together, but I was greedy and didn't want to waste a second of the waiting time. To add stress to it, I had to finish transforming ligated DNA and extracting gDNA both by lunchtime as I had a career workshop after lunch. Now, anyone experienced will laugh and tell you it is impossible to complete so much work in half the day. But I was greedy, laid out the materials on two opposing benches and spent the entire time going back and forth from one bench to another. On one bench the centrifuge is done spinning and keeps beeping, on the another bench the digested mixtures are completed awaiting for gel electrophoresis. Gyaa.... what a dizzying exercise.

In the end, I couldn't finish the experiments in time and was late for my workshop. My mentor had kindly run my DNA extraction gel electrophoresis for me, as I skipped lunch to rush to the workshop. After the workshop, my mentor told me my DNAs were weird. The extraction yield was very good, but there were EXTRA bands. I was like, "nooo.... my whole afternoon is wasted again!!" I quickly went back to lab to troubleshoot and re-run the gel using one of the 16 samples, and found no extra bands O.O The DNA must be playing hide-and-seek with me.

However, I still could not leave as my transformation part of the experiment was not completed and I had to wait like an hour for the bacteria to grow before I can spread them on antibiotics plates for overnight incubation. When I went to the cold room to get plates, I realized there were NO MORE PLATES!!!! The antibiotic plates I wanted were not in stock!! Talk about bad luck! T_T What were left were a stack of plates labeled "Not-so-well-made-Amp-plates".

-_-''' I do not know what the person who made the plates meant.

I had no choice but to use them anyway, and because these plates were 'defective', I had to plate on another type of plate which were good quality, but had slightly different nutrient composition. Meaning, I had to spread TWO sets of plates. Now, you might think, another extra set only mah, what's the big deal. It means I had to spread 13 samples on 52 plates. And that time was already 930pm.

By the time the bacteria had happily grown to the state I wanted them to, I was the only person left in the level again. T_T I don't really enjoy OT, because the quiet lab can be quite creepy! I think it must have really just been me, but I keep hearing sounds. However, thanks to that, I have learnt some plating-acrobatics, as I could now spread plates without even looking at the plates (half the time my eyes were averted nervously to see if any vampire, uh I meant person, sneaked up behind me).

Then yesterday, I went back to lab to take out the incubated plates and do genomic DNA extraction A.G.A.I.N. (when can I get enough DNA??) Fortunately, my vector control went well; meaning I can proceed to actually start making the molecular library. After finishing my DNA extraction, I run all my 32 samples on gel to check the DNA concentration. I had purposely made brand new gel from clean TBE liquid and ultra-grade agarose, so I was confident my gel quality was good. Furthermore, I had performed the extraction using the conditions I optimized last week, so I was quite sure my yield would be pretty good.

So, I loaded my samples, covered the tanks, and plug in the cables. As I was connecting the cables, I noticed the tank orientation was upside-down. "But it's okay, as long as I plug the electric poles right," I thought. After running the gel for 45mins, I took them out of the tank for EB staining. As I did, I thought something was weird. Usually, the blue dye from the samples can be seen at the end of the gel after electrophoresis, but I didn't see them on my gel. "Maybe my gel's a bit too short, but it's okay, since the bands are not very low," I had thought. So, without further thoughts, I put both pieces of gel in for staining... and waited 25mins for viewing.

After staining was done, I took the gels to view under UV. What I saw on the computer nearly made my heart stopped beating.

NO BANDS.

When I viewed one gel which had two rows of wells, I noticed something odd: the bands from the lower row appeared on the upper row gel. At first I thought I placed the gel upside-down on the platform. But it was quite impossible. because the ladder was on the correct side!

Then, it dawn upon me.

I had ran the gel BACKWARDS.

The electrical poles were right, but the gel was oriented upside-down. Thus, all the DNA from the upper row were run into the tank liquid. How stupid can it get?? I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when I saw the gel photo. I mean, WHO RUNS GEL BACKWARDS??

I gave up for that day. Maybe it's because my concentration level had hit low and I'm beginning to do very unsensible things.

Lesson is.... always keep the tank on the right orientation.

Mad rush

The last three days had been, like, experiment-mad-rush for me. I've been clocking in very early and staying in the lab till very late designing and executing experiments to troubleshoot my thus far negative results.

On Thursday, I stayed late to extract the bloody genomic DNA which turned up with terribly poor yield. The entire day of lysis - centrifuge - lysis - centrifuge - wash - centrifuge - wash - centrifuge - elute - centrifuge - elute AGAIN had gone to waste as proven by the blank gel photo. I darn hate it when I get blank gel photos. It didn't help that my gel broke into half and I wasted the time to piece it together, when all I actually had was no DNA.

Yesterday, I left the lab only when midnight struck. Seriously, I might consider sleeping in the lab soon. The whole day and night was devoted to making.... you've guessed it, competent cells. Chemically competent E.coli in the day, electro-competent E.coli in the night. By nine, most of my colleagues and FYP-mates had left the lab, and then I realized I was the only living being (apart from all the bacteria in the freezer) in the entire level. Heck, it was possible I was the only being left in the building. The thought creeped me out, especially when I had to work at the biosafety cabinet (BSC). While aliquoting the stupid (hopefully) competent cells into small vials in the BSC, my back was facing the lab entrance, and not being able to see anyone who might come thru the lab entrance made me very nervous. All the while aliquoting, I thought I heard the hinge of the lab door creak. Obviously there was no one around, but I kept turning around in paranoia and the pipette in my hand started to tremble so much I couldn't aliquot properly. After several minutes, I was no longer creep out but very annoyed because the volume of cells made didn't seem to reduce no matter how much I transfer into the smaller vials!!!! I was already very very tired and wanted to go back to my bed, but the bottle of cells remained still as much!! When I finally did finish with the cells and cleaning up, it was already close to 11pm. But then, I did something very stupid.

After I left the school building, I realized I forgot to transfer the expensive rotor back into my lab from the common room. My lethargy was getting into my head, and I thought, "I'm too tired to walk back to lab. I'll come back earlier tomorrow to keep it." However, after walking some 800m away later, a wave of worry washed over me as I begun to imagine unauthorized users spoiling/stealing the rotor. There is absolutely no way I could pay for that bloody expensive rotor. Besides, if the rotor is spoilt, I can kiss my FYP goodbye. It was a storm in my head as the Angel and Devil debated whether I should continue walking back to my room or to return to the lab. Finally, Angel won and I trudged back to lab. Stupid rotor! By the time I really did reached my room, it was already 12midnight! If I had turned back the first time, I needn't wasted my already-draining energy and precious time!

I thought I could then just sleep after such a long and tiring day. But no no. I had another experiment to design for the next day and had much thinking to do. I didn't really have the mental energy to think, but I kept tossing and turning in bed, until I gave up sleeping and got up to design the experiment at 3am.

I didn't had it easy today either. Had to wake up early to go to lab again to troubleshoot the genomic DNA extraction and transform the (hopefully) competent E.coli cells. I had thought I could finish before dinner time, but like always, E.coli dictates my schedule, not vice versa. In the end, I get to leave the lab only at 9pm... and I didn't even get to run gel to check the gDNA!!

Tomorrow's another half day (I hope) in lab again... and this time, I'm praying all my results are positive. If they aren't, I declare war against E.coli.

Demoralized

I'm feeling so so demoralized.

Already I had no competent cells after one week of making it, and today's genomic DNA extraction failed miserably. What is very demoralizing was I spent the whole day painstakingly extract the stupid bacterial DNA and after running the samples on electrophoresis, the bands were BARELY visible against the freakingly bright DNA ladder. ONE WHOLE DAY spent and NO BANDS! All my 16 DNA preps were gone to waste.

This is, like, a week of experimental misfortune.
Nothing is going right.
No positive results.
How demoralizing.

E.coli-tachi, たのむよ!

I've made more than 200 tubes of E.coli cells, and yet, NONE of them are competent!!! T_T

You see, I'm creating a bacterial genomic library for my FYP and as with all standard protocols, I need competent hosts that can efficiently carry the genome. So, I had to make a fresh batch of competent E.coli cells for my purpose. After spending a week making 2 batches of cells amounting to more than 200 vials, NONE of them passed the efficiency test. And now my whole molecular library construction is brought to a halt because I couldn't generate the right host!! To make the matter worst, I don't know why! And to top it off, the procedure is taking too freaking long!!! The incubation period is like 16 hours, and I have twice come out with barely a handful of E.coli colonies on the plates. T_T

To the E.coli on the 24 plates sitting in the 37 degrees incubator right now, please...G.R.O.W.

It's the MODEM

Last weekend, I suffered the Internet-withdrawal-symptom.

My Internet connection was active but loading of websites all timed out during operation. Meaning, I couldn't connect to the world for an entire day!!! Losing this connection is like a drug addict losing his daily fix!! I could not do anything the whole day, but frantically loading and re-loading the pages, trying to *unsuccessfully* fix the problem. In the end, out of desperation, I sms-ed a couple of friends to ask what could be done for me to get my Internet dose. Guess what? The solution was very simple. So simple that I could not believe I wasted more than 24 hrs without Internet just because of this.

Switch off, and restart the modem.

I learnt my lesson.

This scare tells me that my lifestyle has evolved such that my daily life revolves around the Internet service. I NEED the net for animes, dramas, news, blogging, researching and most importantly connecting with people. Without it, my world would really fall apart. I mean, can you imagine not getting the latest episode of Death Note???!!!!!!

Since my return to campus, I have been so tied up with my FYP that I spent more than half my day in the lab! It's like 9am reach lab, 9pm leave lab... for at least 5 days a week. Although such schedule is very tiring and leaves me no time for dramas/animes at night, I find that having things to occupy me the entire day quite fulfilling and gives me a purpose to look forward to each day. Well... my current purpose is to get the bacteria to like me so that I can complete my FYP >_<

The year that was

あなたにとって、人生はどんな意味が持っているんですか?

In less than 12 hours, the curtains will be drawn for the year of 2006 and the year 2007 will take the stage. In my hometown, as well as cities all over the globe, the world is preparing to party the New Year Eve's night thru, celebrating the coming of a brand new year. As I am not much of a party animal, I have no plans of joining the screamfest or dancing the night to herald 01.01.2007. Such nostalgia, the days of my teens crowding with strangers in the road party, screaming New Year wishes, welcoming the Oh.One.Oh.One. with confetti, party hats and bloody loud music. Over the years, such party enthusiasm wore off and lately, I find myself mulling over the significance of life more than thinking of where to celebrate the new year. This year is no different.

As one year replaces another, I learnt many more things, not just academically, but more importantly about life as a human on this Earth. あったりまいだろう?

  • Lesson One
~~~~- The ONLY constant thing in life is change -
In our lifetime, nothing is forever. Nothing stays the same, unchanged, for all times.
Times change.
Seasons change.
Circumstances change.
People change.
More than 10 years ago, abstinence before marriage was revered, marriage was a sacred union and divorce was unpopular. Today, teenage sex and multiple partners are an o.k., STDs do not raise eyebrows, marriage is a child's play and divorce is the first option out of marital conflict.
More than 10 years ago, the earth was still green, the sky was still blue, the world was a beautiful place. Today, concrete jungles rule, forest fires choke the skies with thick blankets of haze, unnatural rainfall causes floods, material damage, and took lives, tsunami and typhoon killed millions, perpetual diseases plague humankind - all of which adversely affect sustainability of the earth and human livelihood.
More than 10 years ago, I thought friends are for life. Once a friend, forever a friend. I thought friends will always be there for you no matter what happens. When you are down, your friend will always be there to bring you up. I grew up with the cheesy teddy bear icon "Forever Friends". Today, I have seen what 'friends' are. While I do not deny I had my good times and memorable companionship, they were good at the moment in time only. Savor the snapshot moment because they do not last. In reality, when you are at your lowest ebb, you can be sure that you can only depend on yourself to pull yourself through. Never depend on others, because it is a parasitic behavior, and because it will break you when your 'friend' does not return your call for help. In my opinion, the 'Forever Friends' teddy bear is frankly a business trash.
Thus, it would be idealistic and foolish of us to expect things to stay the same they are. I had been naive and stubborn when it comes to accepting changes, because I had always wanted things to stay the way they were. When you reached a mental and emotional equilibrium with your surroundings, the last thing you want is an external disruption that throws off your equilibrium, leading to mental and emotional disarray. However, that is life - it is ALWAYS in a disarray. One particularly difficult lesson I learnt was never to assume that people's thoughts, feelings and perspective are unchanging. They change like the tide, in accordance to the changing circumstances. In a way, I hated it, because it seems to me like every promise made is broken without a brief consideration to the meaning of a 'promise'. I think the new age marriage vows can already drop the "..till death do us part.." and be replaced by "..till divorce do us part..". Well, unfortunately, we have to adapt to these changes, and to accept the changes, because we have no control over it; if we don't, we will be the only ones suffering the mental and emotional impact.
  • Lesson Two
~~~~- Stop judging, open your mind, and practise courtesy -

I have seen and observed many people, and I have come to learn that we are selfish is a human nature. There is no one who does not think about themselves, and is always thinking for themselves. We are full of ourselves, whether we realize it or not. Hence, it is hypocritical of us to point at and judge another individual before truly reflecting on ourselves. I have heard enough of people, including myself, criticizing others based on what we physically observe at the point of time.
Why are we putting down or being judgemental on another individual?
Does it make us feel much more superior speaking lowly of another?
What right do we have to flippantly comment on another when we have not been in his/her circumstances?

I became irritated when I hear my acquaintances making shallow comments before understanding the others' circumstances, and soon realized myself guilty of such bad habit. I learnt then that unless we have experienced the other's circumstances, we know absolutely nothing about his/her situation and have absolutely no right to make any flippant comments or to act superior about the choice of their action. To make judgemental comments on them not only reflects our shallow mindedness, but also will emotionally impact them. Do we really garner such pleasure from making fun of others? When I come to understand that, I find myself talking and gossiping less, and thinking for others more.

This also leads to my realization, that people of today can be quite discourteous. Just a quick check, in a conversation:

  1. How often do you wait for the other person to completely finish talking and listen attentively to the message that he/she wants to convey across?
  2. How often is it that you already formulate an argument or defense counterstatement in your head while the other person has not yet finish conveying his/her entire message?
  3. How often is that midway when the other person is talking, you disagree with his/her point and setup a mental barrier, and stop listening to him/her?
  4. How often do you interject the other person's speech to disagree with him/her before they finished talking?

Communication is the way by which we socialize with the people around us. Yet, it seems to me we still lack the courtesy to communicate effectively. I absolutely dislike it when people do not let me finish my talking because I have yet to completely get my point across. Or when my speech is interrupted, breaking the idea I am trying to send across. That is when I observed that I am also guilty of such flaws too. And I learnt that courtesy does make a difference in interacting with others. Next time, try listening with an open mind before you judge and interject the person talking with your ideas. This is simply another manifestation of selfishness. When can we stop thinking for ourselves and start thinking for others? I find that it is only fair that we comment after we understand the situation described by the speaker, and such attentive listening also puts the speaker at ease because it assures him/her that we take weight to their message. Many things are easier said than done, and it requires alot of patience and discipline, but I felt that it is only right to treat another person with utmost courtesy.

I really think people should take time to reflect on their actions, because it helps to identify what we could have done wrong, and can be improved for the betterment of ourselves and also in our relation with the people around us.

  • Lesson Three
~~~~- Live for today -
The past cannot be changed.
The future may not come.
Births and deaths are always cycling, hanging in precarious balance. For every death you read about today, there is a birth into the world. Natural disasters, accidents, diseases took so many lives that I no longer feel anything about the next cancer victim dying of terminal stage of carcinoma.
Today my family received a call that my aunt had just passed away from terminal cancer. I am ashamed to say that I do not feel anything upon listening to the news. I wondered why. Was it that we weren't very close to her? I have not seen her in years. Was it that I knew there is no cure to cancer? Was it that I was numbed by the easy occurence of death? Have I become a cold person? I still do not know. However, I do remember my cousin's death several years ago that really shook me. To me, nothing do justice to the 4 year-old whose life was robbed by simple pneumonia. Then I learnt, that life is what we live today. Tomorrow may not come, so planning for tomorrow may be futile if we do not fully experience today.
Furthermore, I have been through enough to learn that everything in the past cannot be changed and we can only better what we are doing today. I learnt it the hard way, that every mistake, no matter how small or large, cannot be erased and will be etched in our history. However, we have to accept that it happened, forgive ourselves, and take the responsibility to move forward.
And because we cannot change the past or tell the future, we can only live to enjoy today.
Life's most important lesson is then, to open our mind and continue learning, because there is just so much to learn.
Happy New Year!
Closure
Guardian Angel-san, otsukaresama deshita!!!
I believe my Guardian Angel has been working very hard at protecting me. This is because something miraculous always happen whenever I felt all hopes are lost.
You see, results for last semester's finals are out today. I dreaded checking my results because I know I sucked last semester. It wouldn't be a surprise if I flunked a paper or two. (Remember, I fluked 20 points on the last paper??!!) I was afraid that I might see an "F" there on the screen, and would have to take another paper in the coming semester. God forbid, if I flunked 2 papers, I would have to remain a semester! I mean, I DID register 8 graded subjects, of which 7 were examinable. (Only crazy people do that!) I must have been out of my mind to put myself through the stress and depression - talk about self mutilation.
Anyway, reality is reality, like it or not, the grades are final. If it's bad, it remains bad. So, when I clicked the link to view my results, I prepared myself for the worst. When I say worst, it feels worst than preparing for death.
So when the page came, I scanned for grades "C" and below. And found none.
I almost cried tears of relief, thinking, "THANK YOU, Guardian Angel!!"
Then when I really looked at the grades to my subjects, I see the pattern repeating itself.
The papers I thought I wrote better earned me lower grades than those I thought I would flunk. And the paper I thought I did very badly had an above average grade -_-''' It happens almost every semester! It's so unfulfilling when you did your best for a pet paper and earn a low grade for it.
And the papers I did best were NOT science papers. I spent less than 24 hours studying for HRM and got an A for it. The examiner must have been drunk when marking my answer book.
Nevertheless, it seems I can have a calm closure to this saga of finals, which by the way, I DO NOT want to relive. I may not have performed excellently, but I feel the grades were reasonable, given the effort I put in in the midst of all the stress and depression of having too many exams in such a short time.
Lesson learnt : (those taking Bio. Sci.,)
DON'T BE STUPID AND REGISTER 8 SUBJECTS IN ONE SEMESTER.
(unless you want to kill yourself)
Sweet Round Things
Winter Solstice Festival - the Chinese Thanksgiving celebration where families get together and make glutinous rice balls and offer them in sweet sugar water to Gods for prayers, giving thanks for the bountiful harvest all year round. But we do no harvesting, me and my family are just thankful to be able to spend time together at the year end =)
Actually, when I returned home, the actual day for prayers was already over, but we just make the sweet glutinous rice for fun.... and for my consumption. The saying goes that making the round rice balls is a symbol of the family being united together, so yeah. Frankly, I just want to eat the sweet dessert.
True to the spirit of getting together, we spent the weekend trawling the island for good food. I especially loved hanging out at cafés like Dome, and digging into Dome's sinfully delicious Chocolate Brownie. This baby is one hell of a brownie. Nothing comes close to this choco-dripping-raisin-filled brownie. Served with a cup of hot chocolate, voilá! Afternoon tea alá París.
Food at home is always good XD
病気だったけど。。。
Gomen, gomen!
Lots of things had been happening and I had not the time to blog T_T
FYP had started since last week, or rather, preliminary work for FYP had started. My mentor(s) and I had worked on 3 experiments to date, of which 2 are to optimize the new equipment. Aaa, chotto matta. I haven't properly introduced my FYP yet.
My FYP (Final Year Project, equivalent to what most of you will call a thesis project) is umm, something to do with biofilm, fluorescence-activating-cell-sorter, bacterial library clones, bacterial promoters. There you go.
Like I said, I'm still at preliminary stage and have not exactly started on my project yet, so it's kinda difficult to explain. But it's nice to work with bacteria cause they grow FAST! nyahaha. This is especially good if you need to repeat experiments to get good data. But no good because you get no life - bacteria will keep proliferating exponentially regardless you have weekend plans or not. What selfish creatures. My entire weekend last week was spent playing with these selfish creatures.
As a result of my weekend spent in the North Pole (I meant, North building), I came down with high fever on Sunday. I don't know if the university is filthy rich or plain ignorant, but they NEVER fix the air-conditioning temperatures in the school buildings! The labs and microscope rooms are FREEZING cold! I was shivering when using the confocal microscope in South Pole (I meant, building). And it didn't help that the stupid confocal software kept hanging and required restarting.
On top of burning at 38.8 degrees, my intestinal system decided to join in the Sickness Carnival to, well, make me feel more sick. In the end, I had diarrhea, and eventually, a massive headache that made me nauseous. I spent my day yesterday alternating between the bedroom and the toilet. The weather was also very gloomy and it rained more than 36 hours straight, non-stop. Made me felt even more depressed.
However, thankfully, after a day's rest in bed, I'm all okay and bounding back to the lab to play with bacteria again.
でも!
Two days later I'll be going home again XD I'm sure many people will be heading home for holidays too.
Merry Christmas and a Happy Holidays to all of you!
メーリクリスマス!!!
Nodame Cantabile on fire
My favorite bookstore Kinokuniya is having a members-only-sale for the month of December 2006. Not wanting to miss the great discount, I traveled downtown today to get some good bargains. Earlier, I had caught on the heat of Nodame Cantabile, and so had bought the first two volumes of Nodame Cantabile Japanese manga for reading pleasure. Maybe it is the influence of the spectacular drama, but I find the two volumes enjoyable (plus, the Japanese is not very difficult to understand haha), so am quite looking forward to get a few more volumes since there's such a good bargain now.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Nodame Cantabile volume 01 and 02
Much to my dismay, volumes 1 thru 14 are all SOLD OUT!! T_T
When I asked the bookstore assistant if they have anymore stock other than those displayed on the shelf, she said it's out of stock in Singapore and even in Japan! Because the Nodame Cantabile drama is now airing in Japan and is extremely popular, the manga ran out of print! And there is still no word as to when the new batch of print will be produced.
It's amazing how the drama can create such increbile fandom for the manga. Ninomiya Tomoko must be laughing her way to the bank now XD. It's sad that I couldn't get the volumes I intended to buy, but the dry stock is a reflection of Nodame Cantabile drama's popularity. I'm very glad that it is popular, as I think the drama cast did a wonderful job in the acting of the show.
However, Lady Luck must be at my heels today as I managed to spot a f.i.n.a.l copy of Nodame Cantabile volume 9 on the shelf. Of course I grabbed it before the next person had the chance to. Bwahahaha. On top of that, after paying for it and tearing the plastic cover off, I realized that volume 9 is the volume I wanted to read. The drama version ends at volume 9, and I get to read where the current episode 09 left off. Double bwahahaha.
A tale of Soap River and the Jinx Box
My kitchen is cursed to be the cleanest. And central to this curse is the jinx box so-called Washing Machine.
I reached my apartment this morning and loaded the first of my three laundry load into the washing machine. While waiting for the laundry to be done, I swept and mopped the floor. Like it should normally be, the machine sang its "Laundry-is-done!" song after half an hour and I put the laundry out to dry before refilling the machine with the second batch of laundry and took my shower. When I stepped out of the shower, I thought I saw my image on the kitchen floor. Now, I know I mopped the floor pretty well, but definitely not to the extend the kitchen floor would sparkle and mirror my image. Fetching my glasses from my room, I return to the kitchen and to my utmost horror, soapy water is leaking from the bottom of the washing machine. The drainage pipe was intact and well placed in the bathroom, but the machine is leaking!
Quickly, I lifted the lid of the machine and to my horror, again, the laundry drum is filled to the brim with soap water, with shiny soap suds as the icing. By reflex, I paused the washing program, thinking that it would stop the water from flowing out of the machine. The jinxed box had better ideas: it preferred to continue flooding the kitchen with soap suds regardless the program is halted or not. So it kept leaking as I watched in dismay. When I tried to determine the source of leakage, I was stump to find the source of Soap River coming from the bottom of the machine - meaning, I have no idea what is going on. Frantically, I tried all means to stop the soap water from turning my kitchen into a swimming pool... using rags and mop to stop the water flow. I mean, man!!... I just cleaned the kitchen!
After the floor is not longer Soap Pool, I tried to investigate and figure out how to fix the machine by myself before splurging the bucks on the pros. Scientific Me decided to try and run the Wash Programme, which leads to the laundry drum being filled with water. Scientific Me apparently wasn't very bright at all, and when the laundry drum was filled, Soap River gushed enthusiastically. Now just who am I kidding... instead of fixing the problem, I've just land me in Soap Pool once again. Can you imagine the agony of having mopping the kitchen dry right after you just mopped it dry??
I gave up and in desperation, messaged two friends to ask them who I could contact to fix the jinxed box. I have never anticipated the prospects of having a broken washing machine, so I basically have no idea who to call or how to look for the repairman. In the end, thanks to Mr. S, I managed to contact the Jinx Box Savior. However, Jinx Box Savior is not all the time a nice guy, and he charged me $80 to fix the washing machine by unscrewing-and-rescrewing things as well as bundling some snakelike tubes in Jinx Box using some flimsy plastic strips. There goes every single dollar in my wallet...however, I shan't complain much as Jinx Box obediently finished my third round of laundry.
Apparently, Jinx Box is so enthusiastic in doing its job that it cleans more than just my laundry. As a result, my kitchen is always sparkling clean. Maybe if I look carefully I can see my mirror image on the kitchen floor...
Mi-ku
Everytime I return to my hometown, I would take the opportunity to eat as much local cuisine as possible. You know, the craving for something authentic, something only found in your hometown.
This time around, I had a craving for this bun called "mi-ku" in Hokkien. It's actually a very plain flour bun, without any fillings watsoever. However, when taken warm with butter, the simplicity of the bun-meal makes me fuzzy all over. The "mi-ku" takes the shape of a pink turtle sitting atop a piece of paper, like this:
"Mi-ku" are usually used as offerings for prayers by the chinese Taoist community. The reason the bun is shaped like a turtle is because it is an auspicious symbol in the Chinese culture. I don't know why it is painted with pink dye, but the blue print on the back of turtle usually means "prosperity". The paper underneath the turtle probably is placed for baking convenience.
The edible part of the "mi-ku" is the body of the turtle, which is made of self-raising flour. It is fluffy inside; when steamed and spread with butter, the warm and soft texture of the bun with the fragrance of the butter renders a pleasant experience of eating plain bread.
So, the day after the 15th-day-of-chinese-month prayers, I woke up, eager for a breakfast of warm "mi-ku". To my greatest horror, when I lifted the larder, the turtle was GONE!!! I was aghast at the prospects of my "mi-ku" being gobbled ahead by another resident at home. I was so devastated, after all, it was only during this time of the month the "mi-ku"s are on sale! If the buns are eaten, I would have to wait another month, for which I will no longer be hanging around at home!
I raided all the possible corners of the kitchen where the turtle could possible hide.... but naught!!! Grouchily, I suspect that my turtle must have been consumed by Grandma, who doesn't understand my deep craving for "mi-ku". Darn, the thought ruined my day. Then, out of a sliver of hope, I looked into the cooking pot.... and to my unbelievable delight, the turtle is in there!!!! Waiiiii~~!! I danced in delirium, and quickly steam the bun before it disappears for good.
Ahh... the warm and soft texture of "mi-ku" never fails to satisfy my craving for simplistic bakery.
Recuperation underway
I just finished my last paper, Japanese Language Proficiency Test Level 3 (JLPT3). Finally, all done.
*Pause*
No, I don't feel any different.
No cause for celebration. Not even an itsy bitsy feeling of relief, but resigned, yes. Oh, well.
Anyway, the JLPT3 was held all the way at the other end of the country, and it took me around 2 hours to reach the venue, which is The Japanese School (日本人学校). There was so many people of varying age group (yes, aunties and uncles were examinees too!) flocking the school to take JLPT3 and JLPT2. Almost every room in the school were converted into an exam room. My seating was located in a 研究室 (science laboratory). The lab benches there were very low (and cute!) and the whole place is sooooo clean for a science lab. No shoes were allowed inside, so you can imagine how sparkling clean the floor is.
So the exam took slightly more than 3 hours. First, we started off with the Vocabulary paper. It was not that easy, but not exactly tough either. In fact, some of the questions were pretty easy and.... funny. There was one question asking the appropriate usage of the word "ねっしん" (enthusiastic). We were supposed to choose one sentence that demonstrates the appropriate usage of the word. One of the sentences read something like this: "雨がねっしんでふりそうだ” (the rain is falling enthusiastically). I almost laughed out loud. XD Having said that, not all the questions are easy either, I basically hentam on several which I didn't have a good idea what the answer was.
After a short break, the second paper was Listening. I thought I had slightly more confidence in this paper because Sensei had practise the 2005 Listening Test with us. However, I was thrown off composure when I lost track on a few conversations. And I have to say that is wasn't that easy afterall, because some of the questions require you to make a summary of the conversation before you can answer the questions. The answers may not be directly picked up from the conversation itself.
The last paper was Grammar and Comprehension. I thought this one is a goner, because my Japanese grammar sucks. To further prove my point, the first question left me stunned. It was simple, but I didn't know which particle to insert. So I skipped and skipped all the questions I wasn't very sure of and surprisingly, manage to finish ahead of time and even checked once more thoroughly before submitting the answer sheet. Fushigi da na.....
Overall, I find JLPT3 not very difficult, but given time, I think I could have done better. Couldn't really helped it since my school exams ended late and I had only a day to catch up with the remaining syllabi before taking the exam. Hopefully I will be able to pass the JLPT3. Well, regardless I pass or not, I still intend to continue studying Japanese to the advance level (1級). Funny thing is, I felt happy taking this kind of examinations. Taking up the challenge to improve on my language proficiency has always been an intriguing thing for me.
With all the stress I have been under for the past few weeks, I'll be heading home to recuperate before starting on my final year project (FYP). So my one-week recuperation plan includes:
  • sleeping like no tomorrow
  • reading manga like no tomorrow
  • watching J-dorama (Nodame Cantabile!) & anime like no tomorrow
  • eating Hokkien Mee at Burmah Road
  • updating my other two *stale* blogs
  • .....did I mention sleeping??
Is it okay to give up?
I am very stressed.
When I see the next set of notes, I feel like screaming.
When I think of the exam tomorrow, I tremble with panic and feel like crying.
When I reach for the reading materials, I feel mentally drained.
I can't even keep my concentration consistent.
How long can I hold up myself before I break under this tremendous pressure?
Is it okay to give up?
When will the cat stop wailing?
I'm in a really murderous mood right now.
For almost 3 hours now, some airhead across the block has been wailng into his karaoke set. I don't mean singing for heaven's sake, it is wailing, okay. Like when a cat caterwauls into the moonlight??
3 freaking hours non stop of this noise pollution is really driving me crazy!!! I can't concentrate on my already-difficult-to-comprehend Genetics notes. I mean, sing all you want you freak, but don't SCREAM and WAIL at such an ugly pitch all across the neighbourhood!!!!!
You think if I call the Civil Defense they will confiscate his karaoke set?
秒速5センチメートル
I know I shouldn't be here. But I was reading Omni's latest entry at Random Curiosity and was recommended to this trailer that took my breath away.
Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
I admit to knowing nuts about Makoto Shinkai or 秒速5センチメートル (5 centimeters per second), which apparently had been promoted sometime ago. It is an animation movie consisting of 3 (related) short stories:
第1話 桜花抄 (Oukashou)
第2話 コスモナウト (Cosmonaut)
第3話 秒速5センチメートル (Byousoku 5 senchimetoru)
All I know is that I watched the trailer, am so impressed with every aspect of the movie that I know this is THE animation I must watch in 2007. The animation is incredibly fluid, the colors are so beautiful and serene, the music is so emotionally provoking, the voice acting pulled heart strings. I think the art is absurdly high quality and the best I've seen. It reminds me of Miyazaki's Spirited Away. From the trailer, it seems to me Byousoku 5 Centimeters might surpass Spirited Away. Here are some images from the official site to justify why:
This is definitely one animation not to be missed.
白い恋人
I'm so mentally tired. Just got back from a 5-hour JLPT3 listening practice class held specially by Sensei... and now trying to memorize Genetics slides.
The practice class just now was like... shinkansen (bullet train) mode. We did the 2005 JLPT listening test and then Sensei went through every single question, explaining all the grammar and vocabulary that we have yet to learn. Can you imagine cramming 150 hours worth of Japanese course in 4 hours? Now I know what Japanese cram school is like :P
However, no matter how taihen it sounds, Sensei was truly wonderful to specially conduct the class. She told us she stayed up till 3a.m. to prepare the scripts!! *awww...*
本当に感動しました!
To keep us in a gambarimasu-mood, Sensei treated us to cookies she received as souvenirs from Japan. I got a piece of Hokkaido's 白い恋人!!!うわい~~!!I love Shiroi Koibito patissiere!! When I was in Sapporo, we bought a box of Shiroi Koibito mix chocolate cookies and they tasted 1st class!!! And it was very expensive... although indescribably exquisite.
If you have not heard before, 白い恋人 (Shiroi Koibito), which literally means white beloved ones, is a luxurious chocolate cookie range produced only in Hokkaido, Japan. The cookies comes in singular packets. The delicate chocolate piece is sandwiched between a pair of squarish, fine, crumble-like biscuits... and when you take a bite, you'll fall in love. 恋になれる. まじです。チョコレトーは本々は白いので、「白い恋人」ってすると思います。ははは、多分ですね。
Shiroi Koibito is definitely a must try should you go to Hokkaido. You wouldn't have been to Sapporo, Hokkaido if you have not tasted Shiroi Koibito ;)
Now, if I can get another box of 白い恋人...
Shot 2 more down within less 12 hours. Another 4(!) more T_T
I'm feeling pretty much drained, yet, I'm consciously aware that I cannot be drained until 3rd of Dec. I have no time to be wallowing in depression, no matter how depress I feel after a paper because the next one is just around the bend. I cannot even take a break to stop feeling panicked and worried, because all the modules are bloody difficult. I can only live with this stress and panic for almost another 220 hours.
I think I'm crazy to take 8 exams in 2 weeks.
What was I thinking?
14歳の母
I find this article from Mainichi Shimbun interesting.
"You were high school students before she got pregnant and before you had sex, too. Don't you think it's a bit weird that you suddenly become defenseless high school students just because of the pregnancy,"
I can't help but completely agree with this Kitamura-sensei. In these days where teenage sex is so widely popular, I wondered what the teenages were thinking when they committed themselves to physical intercourse and then refuse to face the consequences. To blame it on the heat of the moment is simply irresponsible and immature. Do they think about the results of their action? Are they aware of the risks such as STDs apart from pregnancies? Sometimes, I think it is not them being naive, but are being ignorant of the responsibilities of such actions.
美しい日本の私
美しい日本の私 (Japan, the Beautiful and Myself)
I came across these beautiful poems when reading the autumn edition of Kateigaho magazine featuring Kawabata Yasunari's Nobel lecture.
春は花夏ほととぎす秋は月冬雪さえてすずしかりけり
-道元(1200年~53年)の「本来面目」-
( "In the spring, cherry blossoms, in the summer the cuckoo.
In autumn the moon, and in winter the snow, clear, cold."
- quoted from 'Innate Spirit, by Dougen )
雲を出でて我にともなふ冬の月風や身にしむ雪や冷めたき
-明恵上人(1173年~1232年)-
( "The winter moon comes from the clouds
to keep me company.
The wind is piercing, the snow is cold."
-by Myoe )
...月を見る我が月になり、
我に見られる月が我になり、
自然に没入、自然と合一してぬます。
( "Seeing the moon, he becomes the moon,
the moon seen by him becomes him.
He sinks into nature, becomes one with nature.”
- quoted from Japan, the Beautiful and Myself
Kawabata Yasunari, Nobel Laureate 1968 )
I have an innate fetish for abstract and reflective poems or haiku and the likes, so bear with the literary phrenetic mood of mine. I find it simply amazing these poetic maestroes can churn such emotionally rendering words.
本当に美しかった。
